Mokoro Trip 2
Our morning started with a juicy peach for breakfast and the realization that I ran out of water. Time to use the trusty water filter I brought over for just this occasion. I boiled a liter of water for ten minutes AND used the filter to be sure because idk what kind of bugs there are in the delta. I do know the guide drank plenty of water straight out of his tin cup on a regular enough basis to tell me that the bugs in their cant be that bad. Away we went for the walk and after about 45 minutes it started pouring rain. When I asked about the clouds seeming to be approaching before we left the guide assured me they were on “the other side.” Well, this was only the third time I haven’t used my rainfly (due to the heat) and I certainly paid the price. I asked if we could go back so I might still be able to salvage some of my possessions before they were terminally soaked and we soppingly push poled back to camp just as the rain stopped….blurg…there was a small lake engulfing my tent inside and out. Everything was wet. Everything…I left my cookware outside and even had all my dry bags open. Man I feel like I trusted the guide by mistake but the mistake was not preparing my belongings as I should on every occasion that I step away from them. Huge lesson learned but luckily the next 4 hours were breezy and sunny so I had time to dry everything as well! So in the end I guess a free laundry trip was cool instead of a game walk but after everything was dry we simply took the 4 hour journey back to the launching point. Didn’t see any more animals except plenty of birds and a bush fire supposedly started to ward off elephants in the area but all it did was spread with the high winds. I didn’t like it but I got plenty of pictoral evidence of why not to start fires…That was the end of the mokoro adventure. I had an ok time, nothing too special or too out of the ordinary and I thought it was just the wrong time of year or I had a stick up my butt. Turns out both were true as it is the low season and all the toilet paper got wet so when I used leaves and dried grass a few hours later I literally found a stick up my butt. It was annoying… but it happened and I shared my stories at the bar once again. This time the listening ear was quite interesting.
