The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) are organizing a steam train trip from Hua Lamphong Station in Bangkok to Ayutthaya. This will take place on Wednesday 5th December to celebrate the birthday of His Majesty the King. The special trip will start at 8 a.m. from Hualamphong Station and return from Ayutthaya at 4.30pm. Tickets are available for 500 passengers at stop stations – Hua Lamphong, Samsen, Bang Sue, Bang Khen, Don Mueang, Lak Si and Bang Pa-in. The round-trip ticket price is 140 baht.
Two historic steam locomotives imported to Thailand from Japan in 1949 and now stored at the Thonburi locomotive depot normally go on trips four times a year on the special occasions of Their Majesties King and Queen’s birthdays, the anniversary of the establishment of the SRT, and the anniversary of the death of King Chulalongkorn, who introduced the railways network to Thailand. But over the last few years they have been in the workshop undergoing refurbishing. The two locomotives were formerly stoked with firewood, but they were converted to steam power by using fuel oil. Hopefully this will now mean that these steam train trips will once again become regular events.
