Set to redefine the Ngorongoro Crater experience, the location of the new The Highlands (opening in March 2016) enables you to be on the Crater floor at dawn.  Set on the slopes of the Olmoti volcano, this warm and stylish, high altitude camp offers views all the way to the Serengeti.

Consisting of just seven stylish dome-shaped suites (think mini Eden Project), each with its own wood burning stove, a honeymoon tent with private hot tub and a family tent consisting of two full-size guest tents with their own bathrooms.  The main area includes an indoor fireplace so you can enjoy the campfire experience even on the cooler nights.

Positioned deep in the highland wilderness, with the nearest property being at least 40 minutes away, The Highlands affords maximum privacy and a richness of adventure and range of activities not available elsewhere in the Ngorongoro.

The Highlands experience offers a full two or three day itinerary, getting you to the crater floor in just 45 minutes with no need to stop at the main Ngorongoro gate.

Activities available include:

  • A walk (approx. 30 minutes) to the Maasai village, where you gain an insight into the traditional cattle-herding practices and school visits will also be available depending on the time of year.
  • A gentle 2-3 hour roundtrip hike up Olmoti crater follows an ancient Maasai cattle trail up a gentle ascent through mountain forest, grassland and rocky outcrops. The walk is suitable for most fitness levels and offers outstanding birding, a large array of butterflies, varying vegetation and a variety of splendid fern species. This is a wild route and is home to buffalo, zebra, bushbuck, leopard and hyena, and has occasional elephant passing through.  At the summit, guests are treated to a stunning view of the Olmoti crater.
  • The Ngorongoro Crater experience starts with an early morning 40-minute game drive to the crater floor, following the rising sun to the crater gate. Spot zebra interspersed with the Maasai cattle herds and on a clear day, a magnificent view of the Ngorongoro Crater. The fertile grasslands soon turn to beautiful mountain forest as the descent from the rim begins, and you spend the morning exploring the vast 300km square crater floor with the opportunity to spot the Big 5 and the many roaming predators. Lunch is served in Asilia’s private picnic spot and you then have the choice to continue exploring the crater in the afternoon or venture back to camp for a peaceful sundowner.
  • An adventurous half day excursion to Empakaai Crater, the Ngorongoro Crater’s stunning but relatively unknown neighbour, just over an hour’s drive from Camp through the beautiful Bulbul Depression. On arrival at Empakaai, you are treated to splendid views of the Empakaai Crater as well as a glimpse of the Oldoinyo Lengai, Tanzania’s most active volcano.  You join a NCA ranger and descend into the crater through thick, mountainous forest.  Once on the crater floor, the lake offers superb birding and the chance to see the multitude of flamingoes that form a salmon-pink band around the lakeshore.  You will have the opportunity to watch them parade en masse, feed and most remarkably, fly before walking back to the vehicle on the crater rim (approx. 1 ½ hours).
